In his book Good to Great, Jim Collins, mentioned as one of the main characteristics of the companies that have sustained its growth over time, the fact that they often measure their success by an almost exclusive indicator. That is, beyond that measure many variables, what these companies are clear about is what to use to gauge whether they are achieving their objectives over time.
In fact, Collins says that the clarity of the companies is given in relation to “the denominator of the ratio that serves as an indicator, the numerator is always profitable. That is, whenever the indicator used is “yield ….” For example, Collins notes that the U.S. drugstore chain Walgreen’s is measured over the years in relation to rate of return for visits to their stores, while Gillette is measured by profitability per customer and profitability Philip Morris brand.
The author of Good to Great says that the selection of these indicators reflects a deep understanding of own business, and that only the process of selecting what should be this indicator and is enriching in itself, being a discussion of the characteristics of the business. That is, if we agree on what our denominator, we will agree on the core variables of our business.
